Tansy Cheung

As a specialist in embroidery and textile design, I am fascinated by the subtle language of form, texture, and detail. My art is influenced by organic structures, fantasy, and my strong interest in Japanese culture. I would also describe my work as being in the space between reality and imagination. I study how fabrics can preserve atmosphere, memory, and story through the use of threads and texture, and I write as an artist and a researcher for Embroydica, exploring embroidery not only as a technique but also as a cultural language that is constantly evolving.

For me, embroidery is a kind of narrative as much as a discipline. Intricate surface embellishment and the way traditional techniques can be reinterpreted via a modern perspective really inspire me. Although my work is based on craftsmanship, I'm always open to trying new things with materials, methods, and ideas. My fascination has also prompted me to investigate a combination of digital and textile design, including my experience working on an AI-focused collaboration project with Liberty London in 2024.

Ever since childhood, I have had extensive opportunities to familiarise myself with Japanese traditions. Japanese textile traditions particularly fascinate me due to how they meticulously blend material, symbolism, and technique. As a polyglot, I engage with sources in a variety of languages, which enables me to approach these practices with nuance and cultural awareness.

I have always considered myself a creative, and beyond my textile practices, I own a small handmade jewellery business where I am constantly stimulating my creative mindset, where each of my pieces carries a story and narrative with it. I create, in hopes of inspiring. And I create to connect with the world.
