In 1828–1829, Alsace-born inventor Joshua Heilmann created the first hand embroidery machine, capable of stitching with over 300 needles at once. Its true success came decades later, when St. Gallen textile dealer Jacob Bartholome Rittmeyer refined the design, transforming it into a practical, market-ready innovation.
